Here in New England, fall is arriving and I couldn’t be happier. This morning through the window of my commuter train, I saw leaf edges turning red, and whole swatches of yellow. Growing up, I lived in a warm and humid climate and although fall came later, it still meant blessed relief from the heat and the excitement of crisp air and a new school year.

For today’s Friday Five, tell us about your favorite fall things.

  1. What’s your favorite fall food?
  2. What’s your favorite item of clothing that you get to pull out in the fall?
  3. What’s your favorite fall scene in nature? (Pictures encouraged!)
  4. What’s your favorite thing that happens in the fall? Back to school? Sports season? Something else entirely?
  5. And finally, because surely not everyone is as in love as I am, what is your least favorite thing about fall?

If you play on your blog, please let us know in the comments. Or just play in the comments.

  1. Friday Play Devotions:
    1. Favorite fall food: homemade corn chowder with dumplings, pumpkin or apple butter, or anything I can pick up at a local orchard.
    2. a cozy gray sweater
    3. leaves turning colors on the mountains where I grew up…an annual visit to the Grotto at Mount Saint Mary’s and Catoctin Mountain Orchard nearby.
    4. Colorfest in October– a huge craft festival in the town where I grew up– one of the largest on the East Coast and the perfect place to pick up corn chowder mentioned above. There is a church that makes the best…Also– three birthdays occur in Sept.– my twin sons (on the 23rd) and mine (on the 17th).
    5. Least favorite thing about fall– Hard to say, ’cause fall is my favorite season by far. I love the smells and the crisp air and the scenic beauty of nature…but I do not like the “crowdedness” of fall (lots of meetings and activities and hectic pace). I remind myself to slow down and savor.

  2. Because I can, I have changed the spelling of “favourite” and the the word “fall” to “autumn”, to reflect my own dialect of English.

    What’s your favourite autumn food?
We are not very good at being seasonal here in the UK, but right now corn on the cob is cheap, and I love that; I also love pomegranates which are coming in to season.
What’s your favourite item of clothing that you get to pull out in the autumn?
My red zipped shoes from Land’s End! But they are getting old now, alas….

I think October – which is really when autumn is at its peak here (September is still very much summer at the beginning, and autumn at the end, it’s a transition month) – is always summed up by the sound of pheasants flying up to roost as the all-too-short day ends.
What’s your favourite thing that happens in the autumn? Back to school? Sports season? Something else entirely?
We frequently go on holiday in the autumn, and this year is no exception! It will be the first extended trip in our new motor home (a retirement present to ourselves), and we are both really looking forward to it.
And finally, because surely not everyone is as in love as I am, what is your least favourite thing about autumn?
What’s to like? Summer is over! The days are getting shorter, and before you know it, it won’t be light much before 08:30, or much after 15:30! And many, if not most days, you will have to have the lights on indoors all day, and wonder if the sun actually bothered to rise. And it will be cold and damp and grey, and you so seldom see the sun, and everything dies. But there will be resurrection….

    1. I love the customization for the UK. I had no idea when pomegranates were in season – beautiful and delicious! I’m insanely jealous at the thought of a motor home trip in the fall – that sounds like the perfect vacation to me.

  3. Thanks for a fun one!

    What’s your favorite fall food?

Anything with fresh apples. This was especially true when I lived where there were apple orchards!

What’s your favorite item of clothing that you get to pull out in the fall?

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I’d say fleece, probably. Soft and warm.

I love the changing color of the leaves. I live in a place now where, if there are leaves, they turn brown and drop off. After 20+ years of living where there was some color, I miss that the most!

What’s your favorite thing that happens in the fall? Back to school? Sports season? Something else entirely?

    Why football, of course!

what is your least favorite thing about fall?

Raking leaves, which I don’t have to do, now!
