I am uncommonly happy today,
and tremendously grateful
and feeling fantastic about all sorts of possibilities and permutations.
I thank you for that.
And in the midst of this joy, I am cupping my hands
to hold the family of my high school friend, dead of cancer
and the anger and vituperation
that seems to have eaten America
and the sorrows and joys of the world
of those I know and do not know.
Sit with me here and I will hold these things
and when I can’t bear it any more
I know you will hold it for me.
Thank you, thank you.
