If we celebrate a Celtic Advent, with seven weeks of preparation of Christmas, mirroring the seven week of Lent, it begins today. I find myself drawn to this longer season of preparation, feeling like the traditional four weeks are the church’s celebration, and these first three, bonus weeks are a gift for me.
In the Advent of Advent, God, we sink into this different time,
seeking stillness, instead of the season’s rush,
craving quiet over the ever-present (already!) Christmas carols,
looking for your light, to balance the bright, demanding lights in the stores.
Touch us, we pray, God who faithfully comes,
with the early Advent gifts of light in our own darkness, and in the world’s gloom.
We long for your friendly quiet around us,
and seek the skill of patient waiting until you come. Amen.
