O God, whose voice both thunders and whispers,
I consider the voices I will hear today,
speaking pain or rage, making a plea or a demand,
voices rich in love and longing, or full of disdain and indifference.
And I ponder the words I will speak,
whether to encourage or chastise, to invite in or shut down,
to claim my place or give it up,
words that may be wise, foolish or just hurried.
Then there are the words I will hold back
out of good judgment or old fears.
May all of those voices evoke your presence,
and speak a piece of your truth,
especially my voice, O God. Amen.
