Hallmark may not be taking advantage of this unique opportunity, but I thought somebody should create a few cards to mark the confluence of Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday.

Sending all my love and penitent thoughts to you lovely clergywomen on this day of hearts and ashes.

If you’ve ever struggled with the logistics of the ashes even as you try to enter the season of Lent with reverence and contemplation, you might appreciate these “Ash Disasters.”

Rev. Joanna Harader serves as pastor of Peace Mennonite Church in Lawrence, KS. She will be participating in an Ash Wednesday service this evening with the good people of First Baptist, where her mother, Cheryl Harader, is a pastor. There is something in the order of worship called “burning of the palms” which makes her nervous. But at least she’s not in charge.
