Today’s prayer is inspired by one of the hit songs of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin (1942-2018). May we each say a little prayer for those who knew and loved her best, that their hearts will be comforted. And may all of our “little prayers” today have wings to those who need them most.
The moment I wake up…
Quite honestly, Lord, I groan and wish my alarm wasn’t so persistent.
But I try, I really do, to start my day with a word of thanks.
This morning, I thank you for the gifts of life and breath and love,
For this world in which I “live and move and have my being.”
Before I put on my make up…
Um. Lord, you know I hardly ever wear the stuff.
But you also know that I need to care for the body you gave me,
So help me make better choices, and spend my energy in wiser ways.
May I never take my healthy days for granted!
I say a little prayer for you…
Forgive me when my first prayers are for myself.
Forgive me when my prayers are not sincere.
Most of all, forgive me when I forget to thank you,
For I am loved and cared for every day.
Amen.

It’s possible that Aretha Franklin recorded “I Say a Little Prayer,” but I have it on an album of greatest hits of Dionne Warwick. Still, appropriate sentiment.

Dionne did make it popular, but Aretha also recorded and performed it. It is on her 1968 vinyl “Aretha Now”.
