‘Tis 2 weeks before Christmas with so much to do
There’s no way you can finish without four of you.
The sermons are nestled all snug in your head
And refuse to come out in words to be said.
The choir is flustered and singing off key,
With just one more practice before Christmas Eve.
The costumes need mended, the organist’s sick,
The Christ candle’s gone, internet’s on the fritz.
Then there are the cookies that you need to bake,
And dinners to plan, and cute crafts to make.
Not to mention the gifts that you still need to wrap– OK, need to BUY. Maybe after a nap.
While you in your cassock and Advent-blue stole
Take deep breaths and focus your eyes on the goal:
A babe in the manger, and you in pajamas,
Resting and happy and done with the drama.

Rev. Joanna Harader serves as pastor of Peace Mennonite Church in Lawrence, KS. She actually doesn’t wear a cassock, but it’s a really beautiful word with a good rhythm. Also, she’s almost done with her Christmas shopping because that’s how she puts off writing sermons. Her blog is SpaciousFaith.com.
