For the gift of laughter:

The author, laughing!

we give you joyful thanks and praise.

For the laughter of friends
who remember the stories
and listen with laughter all the same;
who see the hilarious
in the tribulations;
who enlarge our worlds
with their generous laughter:
we give you joyful thanks and praise.

For the laughter that makes a sharp point
that is yet generous to our humanity;
the laughter that sees the emperor
indeed has no clothes;
the laughter that tells the truth
and gathers justice-seeking community:
we give you joyful thanks and praise.

For the laughter of the child
whose own toes bring delight;
the laughter of the joke-teller
who is laughing too much to tell the punch line;
the laughter of those who embrace their foibles
with grace and so make room for our own:
we give you joyful thanks and praise.

For you are the author of our laughter,
in the person of Jesus you show us holy foolishness
and so with joy we give you thanks and praise.
Amen.
