You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes. AA Milne

God, take me on a walk today
with my feet or heart
or fingers across the newsfeed —

not with my own purpose,
(as if I have set my Waze destination
to social navigate around
the traffic of other people’s living,
or am determined to get in all my steps)

in fact, not for a purpose at all
except for walking
and seeing, hearing, smelling
what there is to see and hear and smell,
and maybe touch tree bark
or get stuck in a log,
then like Winnie the Pooh and Piglet
go hunting or visiting
or bringing birthday presents.

Open my heart to Eeyores
who point out what is disappointing
in everything,
and Tiggers, whose bounce
is even more irritating.
Keep me heffalump brave,
red balloon laughing,
aware that I am not the wise one,

and always willing to find someone
who needs finding
in another corner of the Forest. amen.

The original stuffed animals given by AA Milne to his son are at the New York Public Library 42nd Street children’s room. My photo.

Maren C. Tirabassi’s most recent book with Maria Mankin is A Child Laughs: Prayers of Justice and Hope and she blogs at http://giftsinopenands@wordpress.com/ She’s a United Church of Christ pastor and a writer. Her mother used to call herself, Kanga, and Maren, Roo, except on mornings when she looked closely, then said, “Oh dear, it looks like an Eeyore day.” She’s grateful to Michelle Torigian who always suggests looking up various “day of …” mythologies.
