(Thanks so much to Scott Marrese-Wheeler for his photograph from Hidden Farm Road outside of McFarland, Wisconsin. He quotes Neena Verma, “Twilight, the only time of the day when the light and dark meet and become one.”)

God, it is the twilight
of the liturgical seasons
and today my Pentecost is a heap of ashes
waiting for a clear single flame
on a blue candle of hope.

I will come to Advent tomorrow
and someone will tell me
I should hoist the spiritual discipline
of waiting, but I have been
intimate with waiting for months.

Maybe they will say
(here’s looking at you, St. Mark)
to watch the signs of the times
and be frightened.

I’ve been nose to the newsfeed
and plain terrified all year.

I am ready for twilight to turn Dayspring
that comes and cheers
all of our spirits –
that is the kind of Advent I want,

so that I become for you
one who disperses the gloomy clouds,
and offers your hope
that death’s dark shadows
will be soon put to flight. amen

I am so with you in wanting a Dayspring kind of Advent this year. Thanks for your wonderful imagery.
