Mighty God, we understand Advent…but Christmas? Can we turn from Advent to Christmas, when the time comes? Is there still joy, with millions dead around the world? Do we deserve peace, with fire weaponized again against Black people? How can we hope, with millions hungry?
Advent matches our longing for your presence…a big helping this year, please…and yet Christmas peace is so far off.
Prompt us to know that you are the God of the surprise, of the small, of the out-of-the-way miracle. Teach us again to watch for you where we least expect you. Remind us that the powerless hear your voice, and the least and the lost are the first to know you. Place us among their hopeful ranks, we pray.
In the name of the Christ Child, Amen.

Thanks, Mary. We’re still a long way from peace as human beings. We don’t “deserve” it, but as good ole Presbyterians, we are saved by grace through faith, and we haven’t deserved that either.
