We are moving slowly through the summer
Feeling the sun beating down
And occasional days of rain
When we enjoy a break from the heat

Those are the days
I most appreciate, Creator,
For I am not a summer woman
Preferring the cooler days of fall

But I have learned that
I cannot choose
What weather I will experience
On any given day

Just so I have learned that
I cannot choose
Many of the things which
Affect my life

However there is one thing
Which I can choose
And that is my reaction
To the weather and to other things

And I have learned that
My reaction makes
All the difference to
How the day goes

So help me, Holy One,
To react positively
Even when negative
Things are happening

Help me to look for you
In every kind of weather
In every event
In every person

For you are there
And if I look for you
I am sure to find you
And that will make every day perfect

Amen

The Reverend Doctor Katherine Burgess, a second-career minister, serves two congregations in the province of Québec, Canada. One of her congregations has recently begun in-person worship, but the other is still online. Not due to the pandemic, because everything is now open in Québec, but because of renovations which were delayed for almost a year. She is one of the regular contributors to the Saturday Prayer for RevGals. She lives with her husband, Keith, a dog named Bella, and a cat named OhchoCat. She shares daily prayers on her Facebook page. She also has a blog, but rarely manages to post anything in it.
