Holy One, Creator of all, I hold in my prayers today the women and girls of Afghanistan. Really, all women and girls, for we are all subject to the abusive power of men who believe that we exist for their pleasure and control. (This mostly binary paradigm…and for those everywhere who do not fit neatly into such categories). But mostly today, those who live in Afghanistan and other regions under authoritarian regimes.

I am remorseful for the role this country has played in the destabilization of that country (and others) now and in the past. I pray for wisdom from our leaders, from other world leaders who care for humankind and strive for human rights. I fear for the safety of those remaining in Afghanistan.

These flowers, the remnants of my summer garden, a small symbol of the love of God in the world. May this love prevail. Amen.
