Saturday Prayer

Holy One, can it be 20 years ago
that our world changed forever?
Can it be 20 years ago
when the Twin Towers
collapsed?

We all remember
where we were
and what we were doing
when we heard the news
when the unimaginable happened

And now here we are
twenty years later
and still no wiser
still feeling no safer
than we did on that day

But we still acknowledge
that many people were heroes
on that day.
Many people risked their lives
to save others

They were living out
Jesus’ commandment
to love our neighbours
even if we don’t know them
even if they are strangers

For that is what the Good Samaritan did.
He loved his neighbour
Without knowing him.
He saw a need
and he filled it.

This day, Lord, I ask you
that I will also see the needs
around me
and I will respond.
I will be a helper.

I will be one of the people
Mr. Rogers talks about
when he tells children
how to find something positive
In a negative situation

In every situation
In every time
there are people who help
there are people to thank
there are people to love
