At the Rhiannon Giddens concert
God, I’m grateful for the woman
with songs from her Black heritage,
Indigenous, Gaelic, Southern heritage,
and her insistence on caring
for the safety of listeners.
I am grateful for restaurants
where I sit outdoors,
libraries and local stores
still with curbside pickup,
ventilated, “time-visit” museums,
strained, stressed, creative schools,
(and the saints who work in them),
church staff and safety committees,
willing to shift and change
worship, meetings, mission,
every week if necessary,
and never abandon those at home.
(also saints with hint of martyr)
Today and every day I pray for
medical staff and essential workers,
but today I add unexpected ones,
who stand at a gate in a park, saying “no,”
absorbing anger,
so I can be healed by a song. amen
