Holy One, we have just crossed from one season
The bright sunshine of summer
Is giving way to the colours of autumn
and the leaves are showing off
in the muted September sunlight.
The days are still warm
but the nights are cooler
and in the early morning
there is a definite nip in the air
foreshadowing colder days to come
as the earth keeps rotating
and time keeps moving.
Just so with our lives –
we pass from one season to the next
moving from one stage to the next
finishing one chapter
and turning the page to the next one.
What lies ahead, Lord?
We long to know but we cannot
for the future is closed to us
until we get there.
Help us, then, to live fully in the present
neither longing for the past
nor anticipating the future
but knowing that
no matter the season of our lives
you are with us
and will guide us through
will accompany us
on good days and days of challenge.
As I watch the leaves change colour
and fall from the branches
to make a carpet of reds,
yellows, oranges, and browns
show me the way to make
my changing seasons
into something beautiful.
