God, you are in the details,
not of all my plans for this holy season,
but of the story of community
that blesses me differently every year.

Food Desert Last Supper

Open to me, and to some, even one,
of those whose sacred moments
I hope to un-tenebrae,
so they experience your presence –

the vulnerability of a foot,
in bunion and blister,
and worn by every mile of life,

the guidance of a man with a water jar,
and all those gender-nonconforming
who know the path to the Upper Room,

the hopefulness of bread and gravy
shared with one who betrays,

the importance of doing things
in remembrance
of anyone … before they are gone,

the sweetness of singing a hymn
on the way to a dangerous garden,
the forgiveness of a shutting down
that looks like sleep,
the tenderness of a new ear.

For whatever detail of hope
may be found in this story or this day,
I give you thanks. amen
