Thursday Prayer

Thursday Prayer

When it all gets to be too much,

When the worries large and small wash over us,

When the last straw happens and keeps happening,

When we don’t have a chance to catch our breath,

Be our deep breath.

Be our persistence.

Be our burden-shoulder-er.

Be our holder-upper.

Thank you.

Amen.img_0187

Thursday Prayer

Nevertheless, She persisted.
The Spirit who spoke life into the world and into my soul.
The Spirit who called me into this wild, radical relationship with her very own justice, love, and light.
The Spirit who urges me to get up from my corner of sorrow and panic.
The Spirit who strengthens me to keep walking on.
The Spirit who forgives me and holds me while I heal.
The Spirit who knows I will mess up and we will mess up and we will keep forgetting and slipping and trying and remembering and breaking and healing and breaking and running and wandering and hiding and seeking and advancing and growing and learning and hoping and doubting and falling and sitting still again…
The Spirit who I told off and cut off.
The one that I, and well, the whole world, keeps rejecting, denying, and abusing…
The Spirit who we explain away and shush up.
That Spirit, She ought to know better by now. She ought to know us by now.
Nevertheless, She persisted.

O Sweet Spirit, keep on persisting…in me, in us, in all…and don’t ever, ever stop. Amen.

Thursday Prayer

O God,
I feel the rage coming on.
Okay, that’s actually garbage. I’ve been raging for a good bit already.
But my rage has gone from steaming to bubbling to spilling over.
And now it’s everywhere.
So gather us up. Me and my rage.
Pull us close. Hold us near. Help us focus. Help us know.
Which is our fight.
Which is our work.
Which is our action.
Which is our prayer.
Help us get at it.
Make us clever.
Make us fresh.
Make us fierce.
Make us holy.
Make us now.
Me and my rage.
Use us for good and for justice and for hope and for love.
With focus. With purpose. With strength. With passion.
For you.
Because of you.
With you.
O God.
Amen.

Thursday Prayer

O God,
God of wisdom and welcome,
God of justice and hope,
God who made me,
God who made people who look and act and think and function completely and totally, wonderfully and horribly, unlike me,
God who loves us both,
God who loves us all,
God who loves my rotten, raging heart,
God who hears your deepest scream-crying in the dark,
God who weeps when we break one another,
God who sees what we are doing,
God who feels what we are saying,
God who forgives our silence,
God who calls out real truth,
God who interrupts our hesitance,
God who doesn’t need us at all,
God who calls us to act anyway,
God who is good,
God who is good,
God who is good,
…Let’s go.

Thursday Prayer

I will love you.
I will love you better.
I will love you harder.
I will love you in bolder, more creative ways.
I will love your people even more than I think I can.
I will try.
And I will slip. And mess up. And forget to love.
I will fall down with hate in my heart.
It happens sometimes.
But help me back up, Lord.
Help me keep trying.
Help me keep loving.
Help me love hard.
Because you love me.
Because you love us.
And keep loving.
We will.
Amen.

Thursday Prayer

It’s cold here.
And the news is terrible.
And people we love are sick and hurting.
And it is Advent so we’re waiting.
But it feels like it’s been Advent forever.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.” (Ps. 80:3)

I overreacted yesterday.
I said the wrong thing.
Then I didn’t say something I should have.
All my relationships are messy.
And lots of them painful.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.”

It feels like too much.
Too much for any one or two or two hundred people to do.
To repair.
To engage.
To heal.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.”

And you see all of this.
You know all of us.
You hear our cries.
You feel our tears.
And I really hope you really are coming.

“Restore us, O God;
let your face shine, that we may be saved.”

Oh, and please hurry.
Amen.

Thursday Prayer: My Really Real Advent Prayer

Hold on.
Be faithful.
Keep watch.
Prepare the way.
Have patience.
It’s on God’s time.

O Lord, I’m so sick of waiting.
We need you.
Come fix this.
Use me. Use us.
But please.
Do it.
Now.

Amen.

Thursday Prayer

So, I keep thinking about John the Baptist.
He was kind of a hot mess. (By society’s standards, anyway.)
Wearing that camel hair. Eating bugs. All wild and free in the wilderness.
Speaking bold truth.
To all of ’em.
Calling them out.
Calling them to confess.
Bringing them out to the wilderness, too.

And they went!
They listened to him.
They heard his wild call.
YOUR wild call.
And they followed.
That wild, hairy, bug-eating, yelling about vipers guy.

O God, help me to hear your wild ones.
Help me listen for your wild ways.
Help me follow that bold call out to the wilderness.
Help me to join your weird song.
Help me find my own wild voice and my own hot mess ways for proclaiming your love.
This Advent.
This one. Right now.
And always.

Amen.

Thursday Prayer

I give You thanks.
For Your wild and wonderful ways.
For how You make me think.
For how You call me to reconsider.
For how You urge me to act.
For how You fill me with love. And hope. And strength. And pluck. And mashed potatoes.
I know things are still a mess.
And complicated.
And hard.
But You are in this. So I will sit in this mess with You and Your love.
I will rejoice.
And I give You thanks.
Amen.

Thursday Prayer

For when it feels so important.
Oh. So. Important.

To do it right.
To say it well.
To have the words.
And that perfect presence, too.
To not totally and completely and royally and publicly and epically  screw up.
You know, for Jesus…

Help me trust you.
And get out of my own freakin’ head.
Help me to know what to say and do and write and be,
then, make it real clear when I need to get out of your way.
Because I love you.
And I think you’ve got this.
(At least, I’m pretty sure you do.)
Help me to trust that your love, your will, and your way,
Can’t be broken by little ole me,
And my sometimes screwy-upy days.
Remind me that you are in this. That you are on this.
And that your love is bigger, stronger and more important
Than any mess we can make.

Thanks and thanks and thanks again,
Amen.
