Son of Man,
keep awake?
keep awake?!
We can’t sleep!
We cannot sleep because
it feels as if the sun darkened
and the moon refused
to give its light;
the stars seem to have fallen
from the sky
and we cannot help but wonder
if the powers of Heaven have shaken.
Terror grips your people.
We are most definitely awake,
but we are not wide-eyed wonder awake …
we are not child-like take-it-all-in awake …
we are not ready-for-what-is-coming awake.
No.
We are fearful and stressed awake …
we are tearful and mourning awake …
we are fueled-by-caffeine awake …
we are dread-the-new-day awake.
Awaken in us a new hope.

Help us to see the signs of a new season,
the tender shoots of a brighter vision,
the promised land of fulfilled promises,
trusting in your Word to guide us
even when all else fails.

Inspire in us a vigilance born of responsibility
known only by those who are entrusted
with the Master’s belongings.
Open our hearts to the welcome of the four winds,
to the presence of God’s messengers,
to the possibility in a miracle.
Do not let us grow weary of waiting, God!
Do not let us close our eyes to your faithfulness!
Awaken in us a new hope, we pray.
Keep us ever watchful for your activity in and among us
that we might bear witness to a world
living in darkness
that new light has dawned
and the darkness cannot
overcome it.
